3/5 ★ – jake84's review of Outer Wilds.

This sounds really pretentious, but right now, I'm not really feeling the greatness of Outer Wilds, but only seeing it. I want to like it. It's a really ambitious title, and the technical aspects are awe-inspiring; it's amazing how such a tiny studio pulled off such a massive effort in the first go that, say, No Man's Sky, couldn't. That you can launch off your planet and then be on another one within a minute. Unfortunately, it's one of those cases where the genre and the gameplay (and controls) prevent me from falling in love with it. It's just not my kind of game. I severely dislike these semi-arrogant, undertold exploration-games where you have to discover everything for yourself. I like to know that what I'm doing is somewhat related to progress. I hate wasting my time. And Outer Wilds is one of those semi-arrogant, undertold exploration-games. I think it's annoying that you have to sometime wait for minutes at a time for scripted things to kick in. You see, you can't save the game, it moves in 22-minute timeloops. After that, it resets, but you still have the information. The controls when flying are especially grating, I'm not getting the hang of it, and the progression of the story is vague. I also think they should have voiced the dialogue. I like the intention of the world (or solar system, rather), but not the execution. Plus, it makes me dizzy. The music is amazing, though. I'm not done with it, but I'm not in the same ballpark as people calling it a masterpiece, but I will give it points for originality and ambition.
