4/5 ★ – jared_c's review of The Quarry.
The Quarry is the next game from Supermassive Games who have previously made The Dark Pictures Anthology games, Until Dawn, among others. At this point they have really fine tuned their approach to these games, making The Quarry a really fun experience. The game takes place at Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp on the last day after all the campers leave. You play as the teen camp counselors as they are getting ready to leave for the summer before things go awry. Sections of the game are split up by you playing as the different characters throughout the night as they get split up, reunited, etc. The gameplay consists of sometimes walking around looking for clues, while other times watching a movie and deciding what the characters say or do, or quick time events which can all change the outcome of the story. The story takes your typical teen slasher style movie, but infuses some interesting ideas into it. The graphics here are incredible, as they got real life actors to do motion capture portraying themselves in the game. Every now and then this has some weird effects where the eyes aren't looking directly at the person they are talking to, or the mouths looking a bit odd when they are talking (the teeth are kind of frightening looking as well!). The performances though are great, and really help you feel like this is a playable movie. What I really like about this one especially is the variation in what can happen based on choices, and the pass/fail of quick time events. I managed to keep everyone alive during my first play through but looking up some small sections of what could have happened, makes it really different with some characters not appearing in scenes or not going to locations they did in my game. There are some great features here as well on top of the base game that have been added. The typical chapter select after completion is nice where you can choose where you want to try and divert the story. The only problem with this (and it's a bit understandable due to the nature of the game) is that once you start a play through from chapter select, you have to finish that game through to the very end before you can go back and select a different chapter. There is a 'movie mode' where it will just play through all cut scenes of the game without requiring your input so you can really enjoy it more like a movie. Even with this mode, you can select where everyone lives, everyone dies, or a director mode which you can choose how the characters will act in scenarios, then watch it play out. They also have a couple multiplayer modes, one where it says you pass the controller to others (though I wasn't able to test this out), as well as a mode that somehow takes input from multiple people in the room (I'm guessing via mobile website or app similar to the Jackbox Games?) and the majority votes decides what happens. This turns what I enjoyed as a fun single player option into what could be a great party experience with groups of friends. I have only done one playthrough so far, but will probably go back and try to see some other outcomes later on!
