4/5 ★ – jaymewmew's review of Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden.

There’s an argument to be made that this game probably deserves a lower score, maybe in the 3-3.5 star range. From a gameplay perspective, it’s serviceable at best. The combat never feels all that good. Enemy variety is minimal, making every fight feel repetitive. The mechanics for the haunting cases simply involve running from location to location, clicking on blue-tinted clues and talking to people. I also had a few issues with frame rate drops and a cut scene where Antea completely disappeared (she truly is a ghost). But narratively? It’s so fucking good. The two main characters, Red and Antea, are so fleshed out and complex and interesting, you hang on their every word . The world is captivating, with multi-faceted supporting characters. You can feel the history of 1600s Boston and its surroundings. And the haunting cases have so many shades of grey to them, that there are several instances where I had to think long and hard about who I would banish, ascend or blame. If you like games with rich narratives and you can forgive its flaws, I think you’ll have one of the most satisfying story experiences in this medium.
