5/5 ★ – jaymewmew's review of Retro Bowl.
I’ve long missed the days when football games were actually fun to play. Madden has been a slog for years, over relying on simulating the real thing so much that the game is as tedious to play as an actual NFL game is to watch.
Thankfully, we now have Retro Bowl. Harkening back to the days of Tecmo Bowl, Retro shines in its simplicity. It does away with playing defense altogether, which makes games a breeze to complete. Throwing and running mechanics are easy to master, but games are still challenging enough that they can come down to the wire.
Outside of the actual matches is what’s basically a franchise mode. You’re the head coach, but you have to manage fan expectations, player and staff moral, and ownership needs and wants. It adds enough depth and variety without making the management a cumbersome affair.
Seriously, I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a football game this much… probably NCAA Football 13. And for just $5, it’s well worth the asking price.
