5/5 ★ – jdraco's review of Monkey GO Happy.
Monkey Month (3)
This is one of the most joyous games that I’ve ever played in my life…
Playing this game is comparable to injecting 1200 C’s of morphine into my bloodstream
Or downing an entire bottle of Prozac and washing it down with a Capri-Sun
Monkey GO Happy is just such a pleasure to play; I absolutely love it
Now I don’t truly think that it’s a 5/5
Because the game itself is overall just very simple, there's no real masterpiece-level shit
But it already has a perfect 5-star rating on here, and I would be an absolute monster to have its perfect score go down
This game is going to retain its 5-stars, and I wouldn’t want it any other way
Now you may be asking, What is this game?
And I asked a very similar question before playing it, because from first glance it looks very strange
I mean, I saw this thing on Steam and immediately thought to myself, “The fuck?”
But once I started playing this bad boy, I was absolutely sold
Basically, this is a point-and-click puzzle game where the objective of every level is to try to find out how to cheer up a sad monkey
Which is an absolutely genius concept because it gets you invested immediately
I mean, I don’t want to see the damn monkey be sad; no one does, unless they’re an evil bastard
So cheering up the monkey becomes your driving force for the entire game
And the game also gets you more attached to the monkey by letting you customize things, like the type of monkey and the hat that the monkey gets to wear
I gave mine a crown because one day he’ll rule over the jungle
Anyway, though, again, cheering up the monkey is a fantastic driving force for the game
Because you love the guy and just want to see him happy
And the ways that you cheer up the monkey, the levels you play, and the puzzles you solve
Are all top-notch
Pretty much, obviously, not all of the puzzles are bangers; some of them have solutions that are very obvious, and some of them aren’t as creative as others
But the ones that do hit, hit hard
I mean, there’s a level where you build your monkey a Christmas tree, a level where you insert a coin into an arcade machine to play a shitty version of Space Invaders, a level where you make your monkey a sailboat out of sticks and leaves, a level where you collect apples so that an old woman can bake your monkey a pie, a level where you brew a potion that makes your monkey's banana 10 times bigger
And all of these that I listed just now are merely scratching the surface of all the amazing and charming levels that are in this game
And even some of the simple ones are very charming and memorable as well
Like one of the levels is just clicking on a remote to turn on the TV and change the channel for your monkey, but then when you get to the correct channel, the movie that he’s watching is a slideshow of real-life monkeys
It’s amazing
And so are the levels that are much more involved with their puzzles
There’s one in particular that comes to mind where you’re in the bathroom and you have to knock down a photo in order to reveal a safe with a 4-digit code needed to unlock it. So you then have to click on the bathroom sink to reveal Roman numerals in the mirror, and then you put those all together and get the code to open up the safe, and then you get a golden bouncy ball, which makes your monkey happy
Again, it’s amazing
And I'm not going to spoil anymore levels, because I genuinely want everyone who’s reading this review to play this game
I’m serious, you have no excuse; it’s on Steam, it’s free, it’s not a long game at all; just play the damn game
That’s my homework that I’m assigning for this review
Play Monkey GO Happy immediately, because it’s fantastic, and if you’re depressed, you won’t have to attend therapy anymore
