4.5/5 ★ – jdraco's review of Pokémon Insurgence.
Insurgence was one of those games for me where I would turn the game on to play it for a little bit and end up playing it for 4 hours straight
The gameplay loop of Insurgence is just so addicting and flows so well thanks to the in-game speed-up that you're given to help the numerous battles from not dragging on too much
Not to mention the overall gameplay of Pokemon in general just being fun and addicting to play, especially when you play a nuzlocke just like I did
And what’s cool about this game is that there’s actually an in-game system that allows you to randomize your save file; you can make it a nuzlocke, or you can do an egglocke if you want to. The game gives you so many modes and styles to play right off the bat
And the freedom of gameplay doesn’t stop there; I love how the gameplay just cuts out all the sloppy, bullshit things that you see in a lot of other Pokémon games
Like HMs are gone, EV training is easy as hell in this game, secret bases in general are really cool and make things like leveling up also easy as hell, and there are just so many more things that make this game play as smooth as it does
This game is just fun. Like, I really don’t know what else to say about it. There are just so many encounters to get, so many static Pokémon as well
And they added new Pokémon to the game called delta Pokémon, which are just altered versions of existing Pokémon with different types and designs
And some of these things are actually cool as hell
Like Ludicolo, for example, becomes a wizard, Torterra turns into a big-ass sea turtle, and Wailmer turns into an absolute abomination
Yeah, not all of these are home runs, and most of them do kind of pale in comparison to their original versions
But a lot of these are still pretty cool, and there are like 100,000 of them, so at least some of them were bound to be pretty good
Something that’s also pretty good, though, is the story
Although note that I said “pretty” good, because it’s not perfect
Mainly my gripes come with some of the dialogue that has this weird, edgy, Reddit style of writing that kind of makes me want to hurl myself through a window
But it doesn’t stoop that low too often, so it’s not egregiously bad
But yeah, the story is, again, pretty good
I mean, you’ve got everything: cults, death, base invasions, viruses, a shit ton of legendary Pokémon, a shit ton of villains, dimensional travel, chosen ones, and Mew is a prominent character in the story
Again, it’s just got everything
And speaking of Mew, you actually get to do a lot of cool puzzles with Mew and his transform ability that you can take advantage of with an item called the “Quartz Flute”
With it you can transform into various legendaries to do a task for you
Like if you want to summon something from the past, you can have Mew turn into Celebi to do that for you, or if you want to heart swap with a statue, you can transform into Manaphy, and so on. You get the gist
A lot of these puzzles are really cool, though, and help keep the gameplay interesting outside of just battling
And some of them you actually have to use your brain for as well, and you can’t just completely shut it off like I do for pretty much every aspect of my life; you actually have to think things through in this game, and I like that
One last thing that I can confidently say that I love about this game is the side quests
Yeah, after the game ends and you beat the Elite Four, you’re given a shit ton of side quests to do, each of them being decently lengthy and challenging to complete, with one of them even taking you to a whole other region that you get to explore
I love these side quests, and it’s just nice that you’re given so much to do after you beat the game, which is absolutely essential for any good Pokémon game
Other than that, though, I really don’t know what else to glaze about the game…
Oh, it’s cool that megas are in the game; they added some new ones as well, which is cool…
Umm… I like the music; the music is good.
Yeah, I think I pretty much covered everything
Pokémon Insurgence is overall just a very, very good game that clearly had a lot of effort put into it
So congratulations to all the people that worked on the game, and actually what’s cool about this game is that there’s an island that you can fly to where you can fight all of the devs
So then you can congratulate them extra by completely demolishing their entire teams with a level 120 Rayquaza named “BIG DICK”
And just because of that sentiment alone, I’m going to give this game a 4.5/5
