4/5 ★ – jdraco's review of Pokémon Ultra Sun.
So this review is probably going to be extremely short, considering that this game is pretty much just Pokemon Sun, but, again,
Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all, because I love Pokemon Sun, and I love this game as well
Ultra Sun differs from the originals mainly with the story, which, I’m not going to lie, is pretty much the same story, like it hits mostly the same beats
But it’s just kind of cooler in this one
This one has ultra wormholes and shit, new robot characters, and the Pokemon Necrozma is a fucking demon in this game; it has it all
Not to mention this game is actually kind of difficult, which I love
Trainers actually have EV- and IV-trained Pokémon in this game, and they don’t just have level-up movesets on their Pokémon either; they actually have custom movesets with TMs and egg moves and shit, which is awesome
And it was such a step in the right direction for Game Freak to actually go out of their way to make their game more challenging…
And then they immediately pissed that away with generation 8, but that’s beside the point
Again, though, the difficulty in this game is great, and actually sometimes it even kind of goes too far
Like, look me in the eye and tell me that Ultra Necrozma didn’t rip you a new asshole the first time you faced him if you were going in completely blind, because I know he did
Anyway, though, I’m honestly trying to think of other changes and additions that Ultra Sun and Moon made/added onto the original Sun and Moon games, and I really couldn’t think of many, so I literally had to ask ChatGPT what they were
So I’m going to list my favorite changes/new additions that this game made, according to the list of what ChatGPT told me
Firstly, there are more tutors in this game, which is automatically better for competitive battling, and you get the points to afford these tutors by “mantine surfing”
Which is this new little minigame where you get to surf on a Mantine and do a bunch of tricks and shit, and it’s actually pretty fun
I mean, it’s mindless as shit and pretty repetitive, but as a way to earn BP (the currency) in order to afford the move tutor moves as well as items, it’s really not that bad
This game also expanded the Pokedex from the original Sun and Moon while also adding some new Gen 7 Pokemon…
Ummm, some of the trials are different, and there are some completely new ones added in there as well…
Ummmmm, the postgame is completely different and is honestly cool as hell, with all the different evil team leaders coming over to Alola
This game also adds new Rotom Dex items that give you these little short action replay-type boosts to things like XP gain, money gain, fast egg hatches, and shit like that
Oh, and then there’s a completely new thing in this game, which is that you get to travel through Ultra Space on the back of Solgaleo/Lunala
Which is actually pretty dope, in theory, but I’m not going to lie, actually playing it feels kind of whack
It just doesn’t feel very satisfying to control, but you can get Rayquaza from doing this, so it’s not entirely bad
And neither is this game. In fact, it’s entirely good
I’ve said before that I think Gen 7 is very underrated, and I stand on that; I love these games
They’re just so solid, and they switch up the formula in a lot of great ways, while still staying pretty true to what makes the other games in the series great as well
So with all that being said, I’m going to give this game a strong 4/5
