3/5 ★ – jdraco's review of Super Bernie World.
Honestly this game is pretty solid
I mean it’s basically just the original Mario but it’s not as long, not as difficult, and you play as a pensioning old man who’s mouth is always open
I will say that this game has some politics in it, so if you’re heavily conservative then I guess it’ll probably piss you off
But I couldn’t give less of a shit about politics so it didn’t really phase me
What did piss me off though I will say is that the control almost feels too tight, and let me explain
So usually in 2D platformers there’s always a level of slipperiness to the character you play as that may cause them to slide slightly when they land on a platform
But this game doesn’t have that, not at all, the control is very tight and not slippery, and while I do admire that, I kind of wish that the control wasn’t like that, because it was almost jarring without at least a little slipperiness and there were a few times where I made jumps trying to account for the slipperiness, but it wasn’t a factor and I ended up dying in the game
I just used the word slipperiness more than I ever thought that I would in my life, and I just really hope that any of that made sense just now
Another flaw that I have with this game though is that the graphics make me think immediately of Mario 3 and that’s what it’s directly designed off of I believe, however the gameplay is that of Mario 1, which is fine, but it’s fucked up to bait me with those graphics and then not give me the gameplay of Mario 3, it just made me a little upset
Also in this game, the level design is lazy. Not necessarily the level layouts and platforming challenges, those are fine, albeit nothing special, but I’m talking about the designs for the levels themselves
Cause the levels are all supposed to be different states. Like level 1 is New Mexico, level 2 is Louisiana, level 3 is Texas, etc. But these levels look nothing like the states at all. And this game is very short, so they could’ve dedicated some time to at least making all the levels unique and paying some respect to these states with things that are unique to them, but instead they just choose to drop the ball and go the lame route instead
Now I know that it sounds like I hate this game, and I actually think that writing this review made me dislike it a little bit more, but I still don’t hate
Overall it’s fine
It’s basically just a short little Mario game, with some cutscenes of old men’s 8-bit faces
So yeah, this game like I said at the beginning of the review, is pretty solid
