3.5/5 ★ – jordybgood's review of Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory.
I’ll be honest when I heard about this game, I had ZERO interest. A rhythm KH game like really Square? Why? And then they try to rope you in with the sequel bait, teasing a secret ending following Kairi’s journey post KH3. On the surface level, I really didn’t expect anything from this game. However, I will admit, I had a lot more fun than I thought I would, for a short time. What the game is really good at is essentially being a celebration of the KH soundtracks. No really, 98% of the music from all the games is here. And when you play through Melody of Memory, it makes you appreciate the vast amount of music these games brought to life. Sure a lot of them are just different iterations of past soundtracks or Disney themes, but they still hold a strong impact. My only
Real complaints were the lack of attention to detail in the visuals. The enemy ai was consistent but not the hero character designs? They would give you options to play as other characters throughout the series, but how about the different world transformations Team Sora went through? Or even just his outfit changes throughout each game? It’s a little lazy to me to see KH 1 Sora in KH 2. Also I think further you get in the more the soundtracks start to dip in quality, but the addiction of completing them, earning high scores, that never leaves you. And while I’m not really sure if I’m fully on board with the idea of a KH 4 yet, this ending definitely teases more things on the horizon, and something IS coming. If you’re a KH fan, and you haven’t picked this up yet, I would say definitely get it when it’s at least on sale. It’s a short game(took me about 11 hours with plenty of trophies, secret songs to get) and it’s a sweet tribute to the music of this universe that will make you nostalgic with glee.
