3/5 ★ – jorymurphy's review of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered.
I've always considered FFVIII the low point of the Final Fantasy "Golden Age" but wanted to revisit it to see if I'd think differently 20 years later. Nope - it's still the worst one, *but* I do think there's something to be said for how experimental it is (even though many of the experiments don't really work). It's actually really fun to break this game and of course the music is fantastic. The story is nonsense, even by Final Fantasy standards, and probably my biggest gripe is that the cast of characters is so homogenous, especially compared to the big Square games that this followed (FFVI, Chrono Trigger, FFVII). The five guest characters you get to play as over various parts of the game are much more interesting and varied than your six permanent characters, and I wish we got to spend more time with them. Still, this was fun to play through again - thank goodness for the 3x speed feature in this remaster.
