3.5/5 ★ – josipher's review of Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution.

The Shantae series is my beloved indie series that just keeps going. I remember seeing concept art for this game and a small snippet of how it was cancelled in a Nintendo Power way back that focused on Ricky’s Revenge. And Wayforward decided to go back and finish it. It serves an interesting purpose of having 4 Shantae games that take place after it in existence and also being a sequel to the original, so it’s kind of hard to rate in that regard. Transformations are nice and snappy, way more than the older games, but navigation is still a bit of a chore. They clearly were trying to modernize it, but it also feels weird to knock it for stuff that were a product of the time. Character portraits and sprites are a joy to behold, probably the best art style yet. Dialogue is great as always, but maybe a little cheekier than it has been, in a not so great way. The Shantae fandom has developed a recent…reputation I don’t like seeing represented in games. I love Shantae, so no matter the game, I’ll always be there for it. It helps that this one’s a solid entry.
