3/5 ★ – kariyanine's review of Torchlight II.
Torchlight II originally came out in 2012 but last year it finally hit consoles. I bought it immediately in 2012 and quickly fell off of it. This was mostly because earlier that year Diablo III released and I had already played a ton of that game, and while Torchlight II does somethings better, there is only so much mouse clicky dungeon crawling I can do.
With Diablo III safely behind me (although I still dabble in it here and there) and Torchlight III releasing earlier this fall, got me itching to give Torchlight II another try. And… it’s good. It’s a super solid, loot focused, dungeon crawler but I also don’t remember a whole lot about it.
It follows the formula set by Diablo II, multiple acts that take place in various locations with gameplay that evolves rapidly but eventually tops off fairly early. There is lots of clicking on enemies to attack, mixed with special attacks (that you can customize by leveling up), and a healthy dose of health and mana potions.
I honestly don’t remember a whole lot about the story other than I have to chase the bad guy through the various acts (always just behind him) and vanquish tons of enemies and a good chunk of boss fights. There are side missions that have a little bit of story but none of them are particularly well written and I mostly only did them for the experience. It is just missing that special something that Diablo has and while I did finish Torchlight II, I just kept thinking Diablo III is better. It worked plenty well as a time waster though.
