4.5/5 ★ – kinchia's review of SANABI: The Revenant.
Controversial opinion 🚨🚨🚨⚠️⚠️⚠️ ...but I daresay this is the best indie game featuring a character named Mari with a mysterious and gut-wrenching backstory slowly unravelled over the course of the game. Sue me!
Seriously though, this game is absolutely phenomenal and knocked my socks off. I decided to binge it in a day and WOW, what a roller coaster ride!
At first I was pretty skeptical - the game starts with a bit of slower exposition and the translation is kinda rough. But as the story unravels, everything - absolutely EVERYTHING - pays off marvelously. The narrative is executed fantastically well, reminding me of games like Ghost Story and A Space for the Unbound in the way I was constantly begging to see what happened next.
To top it all off, the gameplay, sound design, music, and art (my god the art!) are all absolutely top tier, like I literally have no feedback, no notes, they just cooked with every single ingredient. Even the translation ended up servicing the narrative just fine, as the presentation of the story beats absolutely carried the story without relying on turning the game into a book.
Lastly, just wanna say I'm super duper happy and proud as a Korean to see this indie game right up my alley coming straight from my motherland. I don't play StarCraft or Tekken or anything, so this is really the first time I've gotten my dream game from S. Korea. And it truly is a dream.
Huge thank you to all the developers for making such an incredible game, and I'm sorry I underestimated y'all. Never again, wonder potion, never again!
