3.5/5 ★ – kubachowicki_'s review of Mafia: Definitive Edition.
'Mafia: Definitive Edition' is an interesting remake of the original game from 2002. The graphics are amazing, as are the score and character models.
I really loved the story and it's characters, and the parallels they have with certain gangster films and shows such as 'The Godfather', 'GoodFellas', and 'The Sopranos', even 'Taxi Driver' to an extent, but the gameplay left a huge void for me. It felt frustrating to have to play with, and at times, just plain unenjoyable. Sometimes, I considered dropping the game because of its poor gameplay, but then the amazing story just kept pulling me in. Tommy Angelo might be up there for one of the better video game characters.
The side content is all collectables and is fine, and the trophies aren't too bad either, although platinum can be a little bit of a headache as a few trophies can be reliant on game AI luck, and some missions on classic difficulty are a pain due to the poor gameplay making it unbearable, and the less I speak about the race on classic the better.
The story gets a solid 9/10, but the gameplay gets a disappointing 5/10, so I guess I'll balance the whole thing out to a 7/10, maybe.
