4.5/5 ★ – kubachowicki_'s review of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
Insomniac Games once again do not disappoint. There will be spoilers in this review.
Spider-Man 2 is fantastic. It takes everything that made the Spider-Man 1 gameplay so good, and it improved upon it, whilst also incorporating Miles Morales into the mix as well. Fantastic set pieces, with amazing character work, both action and emotion wise. Joe Paesano’s score elevated the game in so many parts. The graphics, gameplay, combat and gadgets were an absolute treat. The map extension from the first game made swinging and exploring even more fun. The suit selection is chef’s kiss, it’s an absolute blast to be able to use that many great suits, especially the ones that were not in the first game. The villains in this game were PHENOMENAL, particularly Kraven the Hunter. Most people hate the MJ missions, but I actually enjoyed them in this game, much more than I did in the first game. On the other hand, I actually found the Peter missions to be quite boring this time around.
Act 1:
The opening is fantastic, but for the next few missions I thought that it was a bit stale, and the transitions between scenes were a bit all over the place the place, and lacking fluidity. After those missions however, it glued and it felt like the story really got going.
Act 2:
Hands down the best part of the game. Without a single doubt in my mind. This act was on par with the first game for me, and Kraven was my favourite part of this game. He might be my favourite Insomniac villain so far. The Peter symbiote arc was perfectly written, and everything in support of that was magnificent. Perfection.
Act 3:
Parts of this act felt a bit disjointed, with the symbiote enemies being incredibly annoying. However if you look past them, oh man it was a phenomenal conclusion to the story. It has you on the edge of your seat and hits the emotions at times too. Playing as Venom was really fun don’t get me wrong, but at the same time it felt too easy and sometimes a bit nonsensical due to it being THAT overpowered. Kraven’s death was also incredibly anti-climactic.
The side content for the most part is SO much fun, only certain little bits were kinda boring. Getting 100% and the platinum trophy was so much fun.
Overall, I do prefer the first game, but this game is a worthy sequel to both 2018, and Miles Morales. Amazing game.
