5/5 ★ – lavendermoon's review of Portal.
I've had Portal on my list for a while now, and had bought it on the Nintendo Switch eshop a few months ago, but I've been pretty unmotivated to play any games. I've been feeling sick recently so I've been in bed a lot, and I decided to install this game on my Switch out of boredom. I'm so glad I did
One thing I really love about Portal is the simplicity; it's very easy to learn and adapt to. I feel most people could pick this game up really easily. There's not that many functions to the game, so you don't spend a lot of time learning about different abilities or characters. It's very straightforward; from A-Z, so I feel somebody who might be impatient playing games will really appreciate this
Although there might not be a massive variety of characters and functions, Portal is very good at making the most of what it does have. The point of the game's storyline is that you're isolated. It's very focused on what it's trying to do; going through these eerie puzzle chambers, while a very mysterious voiceover comments your progress from chamber to chamber. I honestly love the isolation. I love that I feel like I'm sometimes running around an abandoned warehouse; sometimes the chambers can feel really creepy, and I love it.
I do have mixed feelings on the chamber puzzles though. As you play through nineteen of them, sometimes strategies can feel quite repetitive. However, I do think for the most part there wasn't too much repetition. I did really enjoy solving them overall. My favourite chamber was 16 `(^ᴗ^)´
Another thing worth noting is that I would feel motion sickness often during my playthrough, specifically when I'd go through Portals from different angles. The motion sickness subsided a little bit after my first playthrough, but I think it's just something that'll always be there sadly. I looked into this on Google and apparently a lot of people have felt this while playing the game, but it's worth it because the game is really fun
It took me three playthroughs to complete this game, including the bonus chambers, but they're good as you have different options aside standard mdoe; least time, least steps and limited portals (I did not complete these but attempted them several times), so it's definitely something you can come back to some other time and enjoy the game for longer. In total, it took just over five hours to complete. I'm quite a slow gamer, and because I've been feeling sick, it took me a bit longer.
This is probably one of my favourite games and I really look forward to playing the second one. If you've been considering buying it, I'd really recommend it ╭(•⌣•)╮🎂
