3/5 ★ – likevin96's review of The Final Fantasy Legend.
- This is one of the most unique RPGs I've ever played. incredibly original and unlike anything else, although I don't necessarily mean that in a wholly positive way
- The setting is very cool, there are a lot of smaller rooms / worlds in the tower that are small stories in and of themselves. The story and atmosphere of this game is a lot better than most people give it credit for
- The limited inventory is a weird piece of this game. Most JRPGs of the time have something similar, but it feels especially clunky here due to how the weapon system works
- Weapon durability sucks in a game like this
- The monster progression is so confusing
- The mutant progression can be incredibly frustrating due to the spell system. There's no way anyone can find that fun. It's weird and interesting, but not fun or intuitive
- There are so many weapons and the game provides so little information at what those weapons do and what stats they have
- The final ~10-20% of the game is frustratingly difficult, with incredibly strong enemies, an incredibly high encounter rate, and no way to heal in the final boss rush other than going all the way back to town
- I've heard this is just a bug in the game, but the stat screen maxes out at 99 for non-HP stats when apparently it can go above that. This further makes it even more frustrating in the end-game, when it's very difficult to keep track of progression. This is especially true since apparently the stats reset to 0 if you go too high (a bug).
- I like how short it is and how bite sized play sessions can feel
This is fascinating game - one of the weirdest JRPGs I've ever played. It doesn't feel like it's trying too hard to be weird or unique, it's simply just approaching this problem in a different way that's endlessly interesting, but also frustrating. It's not a good game, but it's a fun experience for a lifelong JRPG fan who gets to glimpse into what Final Fantasy could've become had Kawazu's influence continued
