4.5/5 ★ – linkthehylian's review of Resident Evil 3.
Resident Evil 3 is a complete re-imagining of the classic entry, "Resident Evil 3: Nemesis" that was released back in September 1999. You play as former S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team member: Jill Valentine. Who throughout the entire game is stalked by the Umbrella-developed bio-weapon codenamed, "Nemesis". It's up to her to attempt her desperate last escape from Raccoon City.
Resident Evil 3 is very similar to the re-imagining of Resident Evil 2 that released in 2019. Crafting ammo, combining herbs and enemies you encounter remain the same. It introduces a new emergency evade that can be used to aid Jill in combat. Or a perfect dodge that can be timed correctly to completely avoid incoming enemy attacks. A dodging mechanic does exist in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. But it is unbelievably difficult to perform and there is no official consistent way to pull it off. It is highly recommended that you practice the perfect dodge if you plan on tackling the game's harder difficulties. As the enemy AI is much more aggressive and you will see yourself placed in several situations where its use is mandatory to avoid danger.
U.B.C.S. member Carlos Oliveria makes a return and comes with a complete personality overhaul from how he's portrayed in the original. His sections where you do play as him are short, but it's a good change of pace and comes with a brand new experience from another perspective nonetheless. Instead of a dodge, Carlos comes equipped with a sucker punching-type move when countering enemies. It is very identical if not similar to Chris Redfield's haymaker punch from Resident Evil 5.
And this wouldn't be a re-imagining of Resident Evil 3 if a certain bio-weapon never made an appearance. Nemesis is just as terrifying and anxiety-inducing as he was back in 1999. Coming equipped with his iconic rocket launcher, this relentless killing machine now comes with a flamethrower. His AI has also been heavily modified to make another brutal tyrant look like an absolute joke. If you hated Mr. X, you will absolutely loathe Nemesis.
With his AI being enhanced. This machine's ability to freely roam the areas we're able to access is very limited if not almost non-existent. This is a very disappointing change as he was able to do just that in the original with zero limitations in certain areas.
Resident Evil 3 is a very mixed bag in terms of openly discussing this specific title. You either have people that absolutely love it, and others who absolutely loathe it. There are valid reasons that people don't like it and I think that's fine. Resident Evil 3 is a significantly shorter game than its classic predecessor, it comforted me and several others during a very rough period and I personally enjoyed a lot of the time I got to spend with it.
I've given Resident Evil 3 a 4.5/5 because I think it's a good game, but not so much a good remake.
Also Metamorphosis is a banger.
