3.5/5 ★ – lizzer's review of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Always loved these rpgs growing up and thanks to nintendo switch online now I got to play one I’ve never played before. I love the puzzles and mini games and art style and characters and story and witty dialogue/ jokes that these games have. What I do not love is the battle system. I have always found it super boring and repetitive and I hate it so much that I try to avoid it as much as I can. Unfortunately this means that as I progress through the game and they start going ham for boss battles, Mario and Luigi are really weak so it takes me ages to get through them. That final battle was an absolute slog for me, I swear it took me over an hour to complete. And those damned koopalings kept on coming. I already don’t like them (except Roy because his glasses r cool) so seeing them in this game and having to fight them one by one was ugh. As much as I enjoyed the game, by the end I was sick and tired of it and I just wanted it to be over. I was cheating in order to get through the boss battles and I didn’t even care. Normally if I’m having trouble in a game I want to give it a fair shake and do some trial and error before I look up a walkthrough but in this case whenever I got in a boss fight I immediately searched the walkthrough and I held L+R so I could reverse through the gameplay if I ever messed anything up so as not to drag out the battle even more and have to keep using mushrooms to heal myself. And I have absolutely no shame about it Basically love the over world stuff, hate the battles, no enjoyment to be had there for me. I also kind of didn’t pay attention to the plot really but it’s ok I’m here for vibes. I’ve got fonder memories with the plots of the other rpgs, especially bowsers inside story
