3.5/5 ★ – mattbrookbank's review of Star Trek: Resurgence.
Star Trek Resurgence is a tell tale like Star Trek game. I like tell tale games, I like Star Trek, so what's not to like in this combination? For one thing, there are some combat sections which are pretty bad. I don't know why tell tale like games can never seem to get a good combat system... Unless if maybe you consider Baldur's Gate 3 to be the ultimate tell tale like?
Another is that this game has a playtime of 10ish hours, and it just keeps rolling from one scenario to the other, never taking a break. The format of Star Trek is built around 1 hour stories, but this 10 hour story got a little stale towards the middle of the game. I say, embrace the star trek-ness, and do 8 to 12 hour-ish long stories instead of one big 10 hour story.
Finally, the format of a tell tale game did clash a little bit in some scenarios where you have one crew member suggesting doing thing A, and another suggesting doing thing B -- but since the tell tale formula means that they have to be completely opposite things and one person will hate you for not agreeing with you, you end up with some behavior that is not very fitting of a Starfleet officer. It just seemed a bit out of character, like.. how did you become a bridge officer with those kinds of opinions?
Resurgence does however have some amazing moments when you're captaining your ship and the crew is asking you what to do, and you get to say things like "Evasive Maneuvers" or "Fire the phasers"!
So I had fun even with the blemishes, and would recommend this game to anyone who is a Star Trek fan and enjoys this style of game.
