4/5 ★ – megoobuh's review of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.
This is without a doubt my favorite Uncharted entry. Is it the strongest when it comes to gameplay? No. Story? No. But the environment, the acting, and everything else make up for it. Gone away from the snow in Uncharted 2 & instead are transported to the desert… and the jaw dropping moment upon learning that our fearless protagonist was married — and separated !! — during the gap between the last game and now blew my mind!!! My favorite line in all of gaming comes from this game too, thanks to good ol’ Victor “Goddamn” Sullivan: “Real greatness is what you do with the hand you’re dealt.” It’s been the motto I’ve lived by since the moment I heard it.
Flipping the script for a moment, I want to discuss the villains. While Talbot was incredibly annoying and was basically a “yes” man… Marlowe was a shining star. Apart from the fact that she bears a striking resemblance to Helen Mirren, she was a breath of fresh air for me compared to Lozaravic. Yes, that part may come to a surprise to some people since many regard Uncharted 2 as the best in the series… but he wasn’t the greatest villain IMO — Marlowe was. She felt so real compared to everyone else, and that’s what made her great for me: the fact that she wasn’t this ‘supernatural’-esque villain, that she was just a human being. Also helps that I’m a fan of badass women, in which she definitely was.
All in all, Uncharted 3 absolutely has its pros and cons, but for me, it’ll always be my favorite entry.
