3.5/5 ★ – musitive's review of Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.
I don’t have a lot to say about Order of Ecclesia, but it is a solid Castlevania game. If you like other (later) Castlevania games, you’ll like this.
It’s hard not to compare this to Symphony of the Night, which is the pinnacle of Castlevania games. Ultimately, I don’t love the map system of Order of Ecclesia. The map is segmented into lots of smaller maps that you access, most of which are very linear. Usually these games are linear, but they FEEL like you’re getting lost in a big labyrinth. There is a large castle to explore towards the end of the game, but I really wish the whole experience took place in a single big castle.
The glyph system is pretty fun! It simplifies some of the inventory management in a positive way, that I imagine works really well for a handheld game.
The game’s visuals hold up extremely well! Excellent pixel artwork and a higher resolution for the 3D models keep this game looking and feeling like a modern Metroidvania.
