3.5/5 ★ – nate_mckeever's review of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin.
I almost love this game. But it kinda overstays its welcome. The cozy rice farming sim meets side scrolling brawler thing Sakuna has got going on scratches an itch I don’t know I had.
I also really like how growing the rice affects your characters growth- your strength increases when you have a good crop. And there’s these systems that just feed into each other. The more you farm the more skills you acquire to make farming easier which feeds into making Sakuna stronger and unlocking new combat skills. And the calendar moves quickly each season is 3 days long- progression through a growing season is snappy.
But like so many other games I’ve played these days- it’s too long. This game doesn’t need to be 30 hours long. It just doesn’t. Granted, the cycle is fun. (Full disclosure- I’m thinking about going for the Plat). But still it’s a strong should play in my book.
