4.5/5 ★ – nldemo's review of Death's Door.
Super charming little game that does not outwear its welcome. Death's door pays homage to games like Dark Souls and Link's Awakening without over complicating it with puzzles and or difficulty, but never quite lives up to either title either.
For a completionist, there will be a lot of backtracking. However, it is quite optional and the true ending isn't really that interesting anyway. I prefer the original ending, but there are a couple 'quests' in the true ending that are totally worth playing out. Specifically Jefferson's quest and the Gravedigger's.
All the bosses provide a nice amount of challenge, and there is no real penalty for dying. Worst case scenario you might have to walk a bit from the checkpoint. You never lose your souls until you spend them on upgrades. There are very few "puzzles" (most are endgame), just a lot of being in the right place with the right ability. So take some notes as you play through. The cast is colorful and memorable, the environments are also unique and fun. The unlockable shortcuts and level design never quite live up to the impact that they do in dark souls. Mostly because you don't die often, so they have very little impact. In the post game they do provide some convenience for backtracking, but that's about it.
