3.5/5 ★ – notyourbro's review of Persona 4: Dancing All Night.
a very fun rhythm game with absolutely banging remixes, but having played p5d first, i missed the changes they made for the more recent dancing games. (as an example - i initially didn't mind having to buy costumes/accessories instead of unlocking them, but quickly grew tired of buying the same accessory for every single character. it became a rote thing i was doing to pop the relevant trophies rather than a moment of excitement at having unlocked something new.)
also, fwiw, i still don't think this series has learned to balance their ratings very well. where p5d felt fickle to the point of inscrutability, in terms of how to consistently achieve brilliants, p4d hands them out like candy. i set myself the challenge of getting brilliants on hard - which was a CHALLENGE in p5d - and did it almost immediately. i'm down to make my own fun in free dance, but it was harder to do that when getting brilliants felt effortless.
the story is surprisingly beefy but so-so in its quality - especially in the middle, where it gets repetitive. if they didn't have a stronger story in mind, i would've preferred something fluffier and more character-focused. i don't need a Big Plot Reason to want to spend time with persona characters - i just enjoy hanging with them.
kind of worth it to see nanako dance in a festival tho lol
