4.5/5 ★ – ohmightyqueen's review of Life is Strange: Double Exposure.
Playtime: 13.9 hours
Straight off the bat, i felt at home playing this game. It was like being with my friends, the characters are so warm and lovely and i genuinely wanted to be friends with them. I spoke to absolutely everyone i could and went through every dialogue option i could just to experience everything there was here.
The graphics were incredible, i found myself pausing on the conversation scenes just to look at how well the characters faces have been designed and how detailed they were.
The social media posts, texts and journal entries were integral to the story imo, i know some people tend to skip this type of thing but it was fed to you in small bite sized pieces that were easy to consume and gave me as the player more insight to the characters relationships. Reading the journal entries made me compare to how Chloe and Max were in the original, Safi and Moses made Max feel at home and were a great friends to her when she needed it, just like Chloe did all those years ago.
I was so engrossed by the story that i had completely forgotten about powers at all so when they happened again i was intrigued and loved using them. The shift between the worlds was beautiful every time and the puzzles using the power were really well thought out. At no point did i think i couldn't handle it, they were never too hard but did require a little bit of thinking.
The areas we got to explore were all great in their own way. I really enjoyed exploring them all thoroughly and listening to conversations. Each area felt alive and the music when Max rested was always on point to the vibe of that particular point in the story.
The last 2ish chapters went so quickly, i was upset they weren't as long as the first but enjoyed them none the less.
4.5/5 stars - 0.5 removed purely because of the slight issues with the game play at points. During the getting in to the briefcase puzzle i came back to find it was open anyway but Max still spoke about needing the key etc. Vinh hadn't loaded in at one point but his phone was floating in the air and Maxs camera was floating in the air during a talk with Moses in the Turtle bar. Nothing major but still a little immersion breaking.
Other than the above the game play was smooth and reactive, a huge improvement over the initial LIS games.
I was satisfied with the ending I received and cant wait to go see what others got. I also love they set up for both a Before the Storm sequel with this story and confirmed Max will be back. Cant wait for the next iteration in this series. Was shocked to see a sequel to this and they smashed it out of the park.
