3.5/5 ★ – oldultan's review of Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part Two.
This is where the missteps in Doom Eternal really show. The subtlety and confidence of 2016 are completely gone at this point, giving way to bloated story beats and disjointed levels. Turning Doom 2016 into a world-sprawling epic rather than the relatively contained Mars and Hell joint it was before is a difficult task, sadly one that I think this DLC shows the devs weren't quite up to.
That said, it's still Doom Eternal combat. Not quite as polished as Part 1 but still chock-full of good encounters. It's sad that a lazy final boss and some boring enemy changes decrease the quality of combat rather than increase it. The base game shows that enemy design and synergy are more about quality than quantity -- to say nothing of 2016's perfection on that front.
