3/5 ★ – peacebrendanp's review of Singularity.
This was a weird one, for personal reasons.
This game is pretty cool. It's almost like a direct Bioshock-clone, but with time-travel, and in Russia. For real, this game is a Bioshock-type game, which means, action-thriller, but heavy on the action, and light on the thrill. There also seems to be ties to the Half-Life series here, as well.
A game with some interesting ideas, specifically regarding time-travel, and combat that is fair. However, that combat feels stale and floaty after about the first-third of the game. The interesting ideas that the game introduces, are not fleshed-out, which is quite a shame. The story feels weak towards the second-half, especially with characters that aren't really given time to breathe.
Overall, a fine game. One that might be worth a one-time playthrough. I remember watching playthroughs of this game back in the day. I wish there was more to this game, especially in the weapons department. This game (especially the concept) could really shine in a remake setting.
To note: I did not try the multiplayer (it's probably not very active, given the game is 15-years-old).
I was going to play the Bioshock games after this, and I will play those soonish. But, given certain circumstances, I will probably play something a bit slower, methodical, and indefinite. Just so I have some time to process things in my life.
This game is cool, and has really interesting ideas. Those ideas just never are given room to stretch their legs. So, this game ends up feeling like a shallow action-game, that is sometimes interesting, and sometimes fun, and sometimes cool. Though, it often falls short in all of those departments, and leaves you wanting more. Took me almost 7-hours to beat the main story. There are three endings, and they all feel rushed, and unsatisfying.
