2/5 ★ – peacebrendanp's review of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.
I played about 8-hours of this game, and I am not doing this to myself. Life is too short to waste it on games that suck ass. This game isn't completely terrible, at least when compared to Ghost Recon: Wildlands. But, as a whole? This game does not respect your time.
The game is bloated, the world is too big, the story is entirely forgettable and poorly written and acted. Also, how the hell is this the game that gets Jon Bernthal? He's a great actor, but this game just under-utilizes him. Also, Rodney Mullen? That's a crazy pull.
I'll list some positives: the game improves on Wildlands in a number of ways. The animations feel more polished, and there are definitely more animations per actions here. Guns actually feel different from one-another. There are more customization options here. More polish exists in general. More details can be observed. And, personally, I thought the world was pretty cool here, and more preferred by myself. There are also a number of immersion options that are pretty cool here. I also preferred the way the story was told here, even though the substance was pretty lacking.
Besides those things though, everything else is a dud. The world is boring. Traversing the world is a slog. There are survival elements in this game, which is actually a plus, but they don't fully commit on them. The game feels like it wanted to be a tactical-shooter with survival elements, but it ends up feeling halfway through that door, and halfway through the Ubisoft-bloated-open-world door.
The game still retains it's jank from Wildlands, despite it having some more polish.
Obtaining new missions takes you out of the game too much. Too many times are you pulled away from the game.
Also, the stealth in this game is better than Wildlands, but still just a bust for me. It doesn't feel good, satisfying, or rewarding in almost anyway.
There are more tools given to the player here, compared to Wildlands, which is a plus. But, the game does not offer enough opportunities to use said tools. Also, I don't hate weapon-wheels, but this weapon-wheel? It is somehow so abysmal.
To note: the game runs fine on Steam Deck. I was getting a consistent 45-frames in most areas, on medium settings.
Anyways, I will probably rate this on par, if not a bit worse than it's predecessor for the reasons listed above.
I just don't know what else to say. I really wanted to try to get back into some Ubisoft open-world games after taking a break from them, but I think I'm good for a minute. The truth is, Playstation Studios has elevated the open-world genre to a whole new level; one that has an extreme amount of polish, enriching story, and fun gameplay. These two Ghost Recon games are lacking every single mark there. Stiff and hollow is how I would describe these games; a wrong turn, and the games starts to fall apart. These games wish they could be Metal Gear Solid 5.
