5/5 ★ – philip_acquaro's review of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Started: November 2022 Finished: March 16th 2023 Platform: GameCube (Collectors Edition) Yeah I know four months is an extremely long time to complete a game. To be fair, I took like a 3 month break from it and finished like 4 other games in between while also being busy with things going on in life as well. Anyways, I love this game so much. This isn’t my first experience with the game however, as I first played the 3DS remake back in 2015. But this is my first time playing the N64 version of the game. I would make a huge review on this but I’d like to keep it short this time around as there’s way too much to say about it. Ocarina is still my favorite since it was my first ever Zelda adventure as a kid and I’ve replayed it more than any other, but as I said in my Twilight Princess review, I can see any of the 3D Zelda games being someone’s favorite. They’re all so different and unique, every one of them has their own style and personality to them with this game being the darkest Zelda of them all. The themes of happiness, friendship, sorrow, death, and grief all taking place throughout all of the storylines make for a really compelling and beautiful narrative at the end once the credits roll. This game has the best characters out of all the Zelda’s with all of them having their own complex and sad stories with the characters Mikau, Darmani, and the Deku Butler’s son all passing away tragically leaving behind sorrow toward their loved ones. We see the impact on how all the tragedies and deaths affect their people and I love the game so much for adding all this depth that you don’t really see in other Zelda’s. The side quests are the best in the series including the Anju and Kafei quest and the Aliens in the farm quest sticking out as some of my favorites. The transformation masks add for so much more fun to be had not only around the world of the game but also in the dungeons. The dungeons were all pretty great, with Stone Tower being the best, although I think Twilight and Ocarina had temples that were a lot better in my opinion. I love how all of the characters deal with the moon coming down to destroy Termina and how each of them are affected by it like how the sword trainer thinks it’s foolish to fear the moon but upon 5 hours of its impact, he hides in the back of his store curled up in fear. Or how the mailman doesn’t know if he should dedicate himself to his job before the moon is about to fall. The three day cycle is great but the way you have to save the game is a little tedious because of it. Overall I think this has the best story out of all the Zelda’s and it was an amazing journey revisiting it.
