4.5/5 ★ – phillipthemale's review of Far Cry 5.
I’ve always had mixed feelings about this game. As an entry is the Far Cry series, it’s extremely underwhelming compared to 3 and 4, but it does stand on its own as a great fps.
What I like
- Joseph Seed is a great antagonist, and Greg Bryk is great in the role
- The Whitetail Mountains and the Henbane River parts of the game are incredible
- The open world is among my favourites
- Faith Seed and her whole part of the story is brilliant, she is an incredible antagonist
- Graphically incredible, one of the best looking games I’ve played
- The soundtrack might be my favourite in any game
- The way the game conditions and manipulates the player - Jacob’s brainwashing is not only conditioning the Deputy, but conditioning the player into just mindlessly shooting your targets in the time limit, leading to a brilliant story pay off - and the manipulation of Faith Seed only makes her an even better antagonist, I still see people online defend her actions and want to side with her, which really highlights how effective she is
What I don’t like
- John Seed’s part of the game and the Holland Valley are just not good. I always do it first because so much of it is a chore to complete, and his final mission is awfully designed
- Removing crafting in its entirety killed a core part of the series
- Despite being about an extreme religious cult in middle America, the game doesn’t delve into any of the political points it raises
- Being pulled out of the game at random intervals kills the pacing, and makes taking the game at your own pace impossible
- The antagonists kidnap you at least 10 times and not once do they try to kill you
- While not inherently bad, the popularity and success of this game is the reason we’ll never get a Far Cry game like 3 and 4 again
Overall, despite its issues I love this game, it’s so fun and I love to revisit it every now and then. Still hoping Far Cry 7 is a return to form but the leaks are indicating they are going all in on the time limit this game kind of had with the resistance meter, which genuinely might kill the franchise.
