3/5 ★ – pinksteady's review of AER Memories of Old.
TL;DR: There’s a very similar, and far superior, game just like Aer called Sky: Children of the Light. People should play that, not this. Or play Journey or Abzu. But give Aer a pass.
Aer has some lofty ideas - telling the story of a long-lost civililisation and charting the progress of the protagonist’s pilgrimage to rectify uncover what happened and rectify things, but the execution is so poor that there’s just no point in playing it when such excellent alternatives exist.
My main annoyance was that despite there being quite a large map of floating islands to explore, there is literally nothing to explore or do on any of them apart from the main ones where the story events take place. It is all just filler. It looks pretty, but that’s it.
I didn’t find the story that interestingly told, and well nothing really worked for me. Which is a shame as I hate saying bad things about indie games where people have clearly put love and effort in, but unfortunately it would seem love and effort aren’t always enough to make a good game.
