For a while I was unsure about Hades. I haven't really truly enjoyed a roguelite game, I think there's a lot of things that are inherent to the genre that just rub me the wrong way. This applied to Hades as well, at first. I was hitting wall after wall, unable to progress, and I'd take long breaks from the game, saying I'd return to it when I feel I'm more in the mood for it. Well, I can safely say I retract any doubt I ever had about this game, or indeed Supergiant as a whole.
Hades is nothing short of a masterpiece, and that is not a word I use often, as I think it tends to be overused. But no, this is a perfect amalgamation of so many different elements, seamlessly woven together into one beautiful, challenging and satisfying tapestry. The story and writing, the absolutely STELLAR soundtrack and score, the beautiful art design, the perfect balance between brutality and satisfaction in the combat... every element of this game compliment each other wonderfully.
Sometime this year I fully intend on doing absolutely everything this game has to offer, unlocking every achievement just so I can spend more time with these characters and even more time blasting through waves of enemies like it's nobody's business. I never, EVER 100% any game, even my two favourite games of all time I mainlined the story.
Yeah. Wow. I'm so glad I stuck with this one.
