4.5/5 ★ – premoh's review of God of War.
[SPOILER FREE]
Hey all! First review on the site for talking about a game I played recently that I absolutely adored! Now to be fair, this isn't my first time playing the game but there was a great amount of different elements that I didn't pick up on my initial playthrough and side missions that I didn't do the first time. Also this is the first playthrough on the newly released port for PC, so it was very nice to be able to experience this again almost as freshly as the first time, only now I don't have to play at a solid 30 FPS.
With that being said, the game is a damn near masterpiece. I didn't realize until the other day that there were many games that came before this, making it a game series, but this soft reboot makes it to where it wasn't necessary to play said games prior in regards to story, aside from referential aspects that maybe die-hard fans could pick up on. But I guarantee that not a single other one of the games, whether it's in its gameplay mechanics, story, what have you, it will never shine as bright as this new introduction to the God of War story.
Every detail is meticulously crafted and well-thought out. Any piece of new information serves some sort of purpose and at times it can even be greatly beneficial or of importance to the experience, especially when it comes to be knowledgeable for the 2 main characters. Kratos and Atreus have a fantastic dynamic together, and most of the time when a reboot or a sequel to something like a film franchise introduces this "parent-kid" aspect, it doesn't work and it can really be grinding to sit through, however this is one of the few instances where that is not the case. In fact, the son actually plays a very crucial role in the game. Despite how short and snappy he can be if it's followed up by the many mistakes that he makes, he's still a very well written character, justified enough so you still come to care for him at the end of the day. Pretty much every other character is the same way as well. Brok and Sindri are great supporting characters and they are fun to listen to and watch when they're in the same room together.
The combat in this game is some of the best that there is in any video game. How you take down enemies and bosses is completely up to you, and chances are, it's very different from most other people. There's at least 100 different skill sets you can obtain, depending on your inventory. This all can largely depend on the amount of side missions you do and how much time you spend exploring different realms and even your own vast hub realm, Midgard. Everything you do adds up overtime, and the game gives you much to do outside of the main story, according to your pace. This is even the case when you finish the game, as you still have at least 2 other different realms unlocked of which you can continue to face their challenges.
Overall, this is one of my favorite games of all time. Despite there being some pacing issues in the middle portion of the game, any complaint I have with this game is very miniscule in the grand scheme of things. This is a very important and intellectual game with a lot of personality and morality to it. If you're able to run this on your PC, please go download it. Or if you can't, get it for your PS4 [even though I must say 60 FPS minimum is much more enjoyable].
