4/5 ★ – puedrogaiteiro's review of Saints Row.
(PS4)
I went into this game knowing fully well about how bad it did, how bad the reviews were, knowing Volition closed doors. Having this in mind, I was pleasently surprised.
There's something very important though, in just 30 minutes of gameplay I gave up on the fighting mechanics. I looked around the options and found out I could set the difficulty to the lowest and have extreme aim assist (straight up aim-bot).
Before I talk about the game, it's very important I mentioned this as it is THE ONLY REASON I didn't quit in the first 30 minutes. I don't know how, I don't know why, the aiming is absolutely disgusting, it is not possible to aim on console, it's the weirdest most random and poorly optimized aspect of the game.
The driving is... bad? The cars don't drive, they glide. It really doesn't feel like driving. Also it's important to mention that it feels like cars either have like 2 gears or they are all automatic. The drifting is fun though!
The story isn't very good. It's not awful as it has its moments that work really well and will get a smile on your face. Unfortunately, the characters aren't interesting.
And since we're on the characters topic: Character costumization is good and there's a Community tab full of characters created by talented people. I played the game as Billie Eilish (and it made the whole thing a lot more fun)
The game is very poorly optimized with various render problems and some instances of lagging.
The Empire mechanic is awesome and being able to open and conduct new deals is pretty damn cool.
The soundtrack isn't bad at all as it features a wide variety of genres and a full on metal music radio (hosted by Nuclear Blast).
The city isn't dead like most people say. There are a lot of things you can do in every district and it is frequent to see something like traffic accidents with cops or ambulances aiding.
The finishers are really really cool but the abilities you gain throughout the game aren't. There are 4 or 5 AT BEST that are fun.
The wingsuit mechanics are awesome. The car customization goes very in-depth.
The game feels like it wanted to be much much more but it did not have enough time to. It's mainly bad for the gun play and the optimization, leaving some very good aspects left behind lurking in the shadows.
If you find a good deal on this one, give it a chance. Turn the aim assist on and enjoy some goofy moments with open arms.
