2/5 ★ – roonilxwaslib's review of Graveyard Keeper.
Disclaimer: The review below is one I left on Steam shortly after the game released in 2018 when I had put about 21 hours into the game. I haven't played much since then, so some of my complaints may have been addressed. Someday I might revisit this game, but the state of the game at release left me disenchanted.
"I've debated for a few days now whether I wanted to recommend this game or not, and I've settled on no. For now, at least.
Background for review:
* I did not play Alpha -- I bought the game the day it was released on Steam.
* Subtract about 4 hours from gameplay (let it sit on the menu)
* I did find this game through Stardew Valley recomendations, but I would have bought this game purely for the graveyard simulator theme
* I haven't "finished" the game yet because bugs have me stuck...
Why the negative review:
* The game isn't complete. I shelled out $$ for a complete game, and no matter how much I enjoy what's there so far, I don't appreciate being deceived.
* Bugs EVERYWHERE. Some of these may have been resolved by the time you read this, but again, a "finished" game shouldn't have as many as it does presently:
-- FPS regularly drops 20 when walking around (90% of the game), making the game very choppy
-- Vendors won't restock. (Which, as far as I can tell, has become a game breaking issue for me...)
-- In x1080, sides of screen will flicker to black as if it's not loading fast enough
-- and plenty of other smaller issues that don't effect gameplay necessarily, but get annoying fast
With that said, I do enjoy the game...
If this was in early access, I'd be giving it all sorts of rave reviews! The theme is fantastic, the art is immersive, and the game mechanics, while a little tedious at times, are actually pretty fun. There's a LOT you can do, and while some have labeled it as overwhelming, this is the sort of game that I've been waiting for! This isn't the sort of game you sit down and relax while playing. It takes some planning, but you feel accomplished when you figure out a good workflow (or at least I did.)
Part of the reason I am so hesitant to give this game a negative review is that I really do feel like I got $20 worth of fun out of this game. But the fact that I'm stuck because of bugs and can't move forward and that major aspects of the game are inaccesible really sour things.
So worth buying? Meh. If you're prepared for what it is, then go for it. Go in with low expectations and you'll love it. Personally, though, I say wait. I can guarantee you're going to be disappointed when you find out what's missing from the later parts of the game. Plus, there are too many bugs at present that negatively impact gameplay."
