3/5 ★ – ruskasielu's review of Lil Gator Game.
This game is very sweet, but mind the sugar overdose.
Positive : It feels great to play, the movements are the best part. It's fluid, you get several ways of moving, sliding, flying... And it's very snappy. The graphics are nice and colorful and the game has a certain humour to it. It's also not too long (albeit slightly too much for what it does). I enjoyed the final dialog between the main character and his sister, and i think many of us can relate to the 2 characters.
Negative :
- overall the story and narration weren't that interesting to me. It does this thing that some indie games do of trying to be too quirky which can be grating after a while.
- There was more dialog than necessary with the characters and by the end of the game i was skipping most of it.
- Some "quests" had instructions that were a bit too vague avout where to go
- the tone is also veeeeery peaceful/inclusive/non-violent, which can be fine, but it felt quite sterile because of it (also the French version uses the "iel" pronoun all the time, which can be a controversial decision for some people)
- my main gripe though is the total absence of challenge. I normaly like easy games or puzzle games, but this did not challenge me on any front. "Ennemies" are just collectables, all the quests are extremely basic (break stuff or bring something to the npc), no puzzles, no real secret to discover. It felt like playing a gameplay demo rather than an actual game, and by the end i was growing bored of it. Fortunately it's not too long
So, an honest little game which feels great to play, but i wish the story and content were a bit less flat and "conventional"
