2.5/5 ★ – russelljar6's review of Wargroove.
Wargroove is a turn-based tactical strategy game in a similar vein to Advance Wars. I initially thought this game was going to be a blend of Advance Wars and Fire Emblem, so I was excited to play this one. In reality, it is a blend of the two, just not in the way I expected. There are a lot of missions that require capturing villages, building up an army, and conquering the opponent (like Advance Wars). There are also many missions where you are given starting units, and must clear a map (like Fire Emblem). Most missions, you get 1 commander who joins in the battle. This unit is stronger than other units and has a special ability that charges up over time. The stand-out missions are a fusion of the elements from FE and AW. There are a few missions where you will have multiple commanders and multiple armies to control. This works very well and gives the game a unique feeling. The missions were you build up a base/army are also quite enjoyable. However, the map clearing w/o reinforcement missions are entirely a slog. Think FE, but instead of unique and powerful units that you care about, you are controlling a group of nameless spearmen. Aside from a few stand-out missions, the overall design of the campaign felt mostly subpar. The few missions that did work well just made me realize how much of an opportunity was missed for most of the single player campaign.
Luckily, there is a lot of additional content packed into this game. There is "Puzzle Mode" where you have 1 turn to complete an objection in a pre-set situation. This mode was a lot of fun and gave off the "I'm a genius!" vide quite often. I had never seen anything like this in a strategy game and found it very enjoyable and challenging.
TLDR: A decent tactics game that offers high difficulty without much reward, but the occasional frustration. The campaign is mostly lackluster, but it is chock full of other content.
As a Game: 6.5/10
My Liking: 7.5/10
