4/5 ★ – rutkoske's review of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for the Switch was a blast. The levels are that classic, creatively and tightly designed Nintendo magic. The missions are clear and the game looks terrific on the hardware. There are ideas aplenty here, from sneaking by enemies to rotating whole parts of stages. The music gets repetitive and there are only 2 bosses that are reused many times. There is nearly no story but that does not bother me. The game is a joy to play through as a casual fan. But if you're gunning for 100%, get ready. With the $6 DLC which I found to be reasonable, there are 101 total levels. All are between 10 seconds and 10 minutes long. There are 3 gems to get in most levels, and following that there are bonus challenges such as not taking a hit or finding a hidden golden mushroom. After all of this, 99 of those levels have a time attack. A time is presented to you that you must beat and the level is exactly the same. Playing all 95 timed levels nets you nothing. Its just another objective to do. Some are really tough, but this is emblematic of the biggest problem with completing this game: you replay these levels so many times, so while there are 101 levels, you will be hopping into stages probably 500 times with screw ups and replays. There are two final challenge levels with bonus objectives and took me a collective 4 hours to beat them in total, which was just grueling. The game is great, but towards the end I wanted it all to stop. So don't complete it, just play what you want and ignore the levels that give you grief, none of the struggle is really worth it.
