3.5/5 ★ – scomik's review of Borderlands 4.
Overall Score: 18/25
Don't let the overall score deter you from this game. Borderlands 4 is a step in the right direction for the franchise. While the story
is SEVERELY lacking, probably because they were writing BL4 and Tiny Tina's wonderlands at the same time (and put all the writing budget into tiny tina), the gameplay more than makes up for that weakness. With smooth Gameplay (at least on PS5), fun humor, and a plethora of guns, Gearbox is able to create an atmosphere that you can enjoy hundreds of hours roaming around, killing psychos, and creating mayhem with your friends.
Game: Borderlands 4
Category: Shooter
Subcategory: RPG
Platform: PS5
Setting: Performance
Progress at time of writing: Game Cleared, not platinumed
Gameplay/Combat 10/10
+I really enjoy jetting around whether it be through the air or on my digistruct bike. Can digistruct bike nearly anywhere is a good inclusion and I enjoy them making a joke about it in the game.
+Combat was entirely smooth and I never really noticed any stuttering.
+gliding and dodging with jet boosts was a great inclusion
+Many different types of guns/attachment combinations make many of the guns just feel.
+typical level up sytem but with a large skill tree for many combinations
+Open world worked, it was not empty like some games tend to be
-Specialization system is ok, personally enjoyed cross progression between characters in the past (badass rank and guardian rank).
Story 1.5 / 5
-The story is forgettable, the characters are forgettable, the villains are forgettable.
+Rush was a good addition though
-Its a typical save the enslaved people story with no game defining twist, turn, or moment
+I played as rafa and he seemed to have character. The other playable vault hunters seemed good too.
+Brought characters from previous games back which is nice to see but...
-claptrap is literally the first person you meet after tutorial island and you are with him for 2 missions then he dissapears from the main quest... huh?
- Did not bring many of the fan favorites back
- In the overall plotline of Borderlands this game just feels like its almost entirely filler with not too much connection to the main story.
Graphics 2 / 3
+Graphics are not groundbreaking but the slight comic book style is always a pleasure to see in a borderlands game.
+It's clear that they put detail into many of the guns. I found that one of the guns when aiming down the site had a rotational degree (360 being North, 180 being south)
Music/SFX 0.5 / 2
-Pretty basic music.. at least its there.
+Some guns make funny noises or say weird things instead of the normal gunfire sound
Replayability/Postgame 3/3
+Currently 4 characters to choose with different voicelines and personalities with multiple playstyles each for many different ways to replay the game.
+You will most likely have tons of leftover map icons to complete after beating the game
+also there is Ultra Vault hunter difficulties and challenges to unlock for a little more fun.
Miscelaneous/Unique Features 1 / 2
+Borderlands always has a fun sense of humor about itself and the world.
+Tons of guns and all the legendaries have a unique ability whether its a good or bad gun is for you to decide.
-I felt as though its an overall downgrade on cutomization from BL3 and Tiny Tina's wonderlands.
-Removed in stead of improve upon having a "vault hunter room" the player could customize
-Did not introduce anything to move the Loot shooter genre forward
- The Menu UI during splitscreen is currently full of bugs
Recommendation: I personally recomend that its ok for the $70 price tag if all you are looking for is a fun co-op time with friends and the amount of things to do in the game. If not wait for any type of discount... or ask for it as a birthday gift.
