1/5 ★ – scremerald's review of The Quarry.
I have never been so angry at a game as I have The Quarry so strap in
10 hours 10 HOURS of walking simulator where the stakes were so low i found myself glancing at my phone whilst playing. I played Until Dawn recently and wouldn’t have dared look at my phone, I was on the edge of my seat, I was truly scared for me and the characters from the start and felt I could have got them killed at any point. The Quarry was 10 hours of nothing, no fear, no scary atmosphere, no tense situations.
Until Chapter 9.
I had hopes it might pick up here as Laura finally made for some good action, but instead everything became a rushed mess! I’m still confused as to who was good and who was bad, and all of a sudden after there being no stakes for 10 hours, if you so much as lost focus for a millisecond everyone was dead and the story is never concluded. And it’s very easy to not be focused when i’m forcing myself to finish a game I’m not enjoying.
One thing Until Dawn did well was pepper action and adrenaline in amongst the slower chapters. The Quarry seemed to just have 0 action then too much of it at the end.
And what was the Dont Breathe mechanic? It never seemed to matter, if you got the timing right (which was very easy to do) something bad usually happened anyway.
I did think the werewolves were good and scary, if you managed to see them for more than 3 seconds before Chapter 9…
TLDR: somehow so painfully slow paced but messily rushed all at once and 11 hours I won’t get back.
