3.5/5 ★ – shauny_32's review of Silent Hill: Origins.
PCSX2 VERSION:
UNDERRATED!
Silent Hill: Origins often gets a lot of criticism for not being made by the original developers and taking some liberties with the lore. Whilst the production of the game was a nightmare, the game itself holds up pretty well, and I can only praise the Climax for making something that roughly stands alongside the previous entries as a great survival horror game.
Travis is a fine character. He's not quite as strong as previous protagonists but I like him all the same. His back story is suitably disturbing and I was compelled to find out more.
The monsters, in my opinion, are an improvement after Silent Hill 3. I was a little frustrated by the controls, and the camara angles that adversely affected combat, but the addition of a variety of household items to use as weapons and large selection of guns eventually won me over.
I enjoyed the environment. Once again, I preferred the areas over Silent Hill 3 (Urgh, The Subway, what a chore), particularly the streets themselves.
The game never holds back with the violence, and I was pleased it wasn't as watered down as I expected. I like the addition of a serial killer, but I wish there was more a conclusion. The ending is a little goofy, but again, I was expecting worse.
Finally, I really need to emphasize how good the soundtrack is. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's as good as amazing as Akira Yamaoka has ever done.
Maybe my expectations were low but I really enjoyed Silent Hill: Origins. Overall, it's quite as strong as the first four games, but I absolutely recommend it to Silent Hill and Survival Horror fans alike.
