3.5/5 ★ – sirvalkyerie's review of Quake Champions.

I gotta be honest, I really like Quake Champions. It's as fun as arena shooter as I've ever played, and the hero abilities make the game engaging and raise the extraordinarily low skill floor enough for me to feel like I'm not completely dumpstered every time I try to play it. It's heartbreaking the game didn't get more attention in the long run. It was basically DoA. I understand arena shooters are more niche now than ever, and I understand they're relatively inaccessible to newcomers because of their difficulty. But I don't care. Somehow Fortnite (which has a pretty high skill threshold on account of the building) blew the doors off as a massive success despite its very apparent oddities. Yet Quake Champions alienated players that wanted a pure arena shooter experience by adding in heroes and hero abilities, yet also alienated anyone who wanted to play a shooter by being a fast twitch arena shooter. Shame either way. I guess I just fit nicely into the impossibly small niche Quake Champions occupies. Playerbase is getting too small these days to be able to play reliably, so I haven't touched it in awhile. Miss it from time to time, though.
