3/5 ★ – slayzie's review of Assassin's Creed III Remastered.
This game has like one of the worst pacing and so many weird choices with how it’s story’s structured, I found the game pretty decent as there is some interesting moments and VERY good characters.
Pacing is a lil weird as the first couple of hours you’re playing as Haytham and as Connor when he’s a child which makes the game very boring at first. One of the weird choices the game has is that like 90% of Connor’s character development is done in the Homestead missions that aren’t apart of the main story. Even Achilles’ death happens here and because these missions are basically side missions so by the ending of the main game if you didn’t touch the Homestead missions you’re left feeling like you’re missing a big part of the story. Modern day in this game is the best its ever been, the modern day missions are so fun but FUCKKKK THAT ENDING, done my boy Desmond so wrong he genuinely didn’t need to go out like that it was such a stupid ending. In terms of characters though this is the best Templar Order we’ve ever seen simply because of the characters of Charles Lee and Haythem Kenway, I genuinely love the way Haythem challenges Connor in this game and their ideals clash, it even gets to a point where you start to see Haythem’s viewpoint and you start to understand things from the perspective of a Templar.
AC3 has its highs and lows in terms of gameplay, one of its highs is the overall combat, I enjoy being a one man army and taking down a bunch of guards however one of its lows to me is the jankyness of the parkour system. Connor sometimes will just climb things on a random and it can be very jarring sometimes, another low of the gameplay is the naval combat along with the naval missions and some of the boring missions during the battles like when you have to control an infantry squad and control a cannon and fire at the british army which is pretty boring.
Stealth wise I think this is where Assassin’s Creed starts to dive more into the Open World Action Adventure type of game rather than a Action Stealth game, due to the environment / setting the option for stealth isn’t as available as it was in the Ezio Trilogy - I’m not saying theres no stealth as in the frontier you can hide in bushes and tree climb as a way of sneaking up on opponents, but the overall mission structure doesn’t priortise stealth (only sometimes and in some sections) I don’t think that’s a problem but I do wish we had more stealth focused missions.
This game isn’t even bad to me, I’d 100% replay it just has issues and some rough edges which drags the rating down, from what I’ve seen online this is like one of the most divisive games in the franchise and although it’s far from the best and not as good as the Ezio trilogy I genuinely believe it’s a solid entry and can be enjoyed when you don’t think about the pacing and when you’re not doing the boring naval missions or some of the missions during the revolution. It has solid set pieces and the environment / setting is pretty cool - characters are solid and this is like the best Templar Order we’ve ever gotten just because of Haythem.
