2.5/5 ★ – slayzie's review of Assassin's Creed: Rogue.
Alright for this review (and my next ones) im gonna break them down into different sections to make them more digestible for myself and whoevers reading.
Introduction: For Assassin’s Creed Rogue, let me start off by saying this game is just missed potential, the one game where we get to play as a Templar and Ubisoft just fumble it by making it a reskin of a Black Flag and then having a rushed story, and even though it’s a reskin if Black Flag, the game somehow manages to be way more buggy and jankier than that game making this playthrough annoying at many parts To be honest with all the stuff I’ve heard about the game regardless of the negativity and the overall opinions of the game I went into it expecting to actually be one of the few people that likes it, but after playing it it’s easily one of the worst Assassin’s Creed games to date and it hurts to say that due to the potential the game had.
Story / Characters: This game’s story as I said before is very rushed and you can tell by the playtime, the game is roughly about 10 hours long and I beat it in like 12 hours (I done some side stuff to actually elongate the playtime a lil) but regardless this really makes the story feel rushed and you’re not able to really connect with any of the characters of than Shay to be honest. The game takes the perspective of a Templar whilst interesting in premise fails upon execution, instead of us questioning the Assassin’s actions and making us agree or view Templar’s differently all Ubisoft did was make them swap roles and the colonial brotherhood come off as cartoonish ass villains from the very moment you step into the game. You can even see this before Shay turns into a Templar as the other Assassins kinda treat him like shit? Like hes treated like hes the worst assassin when he’s the best one there for absolutely no reason and I found his “friends” to be fucking pricks and I couldn’t wait to assassinate them.
In terms of the story you could tell how it was going to play out by like the first two hours because of how they set up the characters so the real question was what made Shay turn into a Templar? Really it’s because the Assassin’s were doing dumbshit with the pieces of eden and Shay was just basically telling them to chill out and stop killing people, he doesn’t even seem devoted to the templar cause at all, he just seems like he wants to stop anyone from touching the precursor sites and messing with lies which kinda makes his transition a bit lame. If you m think about it the events game could’ve been prevented if Achillies listened to Shay or there was just basic human communication done between them but nooo the Assassins want to treat Shay like an idiot and thats why the colonial brotherhood got wiped out so easily it was kind’ve deserved. You assassinate all his friends before you really form a connection with them so when you kill his bretheren you kinda don’t really care. The side characters like Christoper Gist were just there and I feel like we really got them in short bursts and the game definitely needed more time to cook in the oven before being released because this is allll just missed potential. Idk theres not even much to say because Shay just turns into a templar to stop the Assassin’s from causing Earthquakes, kinda lame. Shay himself I like, if theres a good thing I’d say right now is that Shay is a cool character, although the story sucks becauss his Assassin to Templar transformation makes sense even though the story doesn’t do the best on expressing it or showcasing that.
Gameplay: The game plays the same as Black Flag, theres just a few add ons and some new mechanics like how in this game you can get your ship rammed by an enemy crew and they can board your ship, or the addition of Assassin Stalkers who hide in the shadows and ambush you if you’re too close or even the whole air rifle and grenade launcher weapons being added which spiced up the games Stealth and Infiltration missions which I think were good additions but it relatively played out exactly like Black Flag and idk if its just me but it feeeels sooooo much buggier and jankier. There were many times where I’d desynchronise because of the fact that Shay doesn’t move the way you want him to it’s
like he’s a stiff Edward Kenway and it fucking sucks right after playing Black Flag. The naval combat is the exact same as Black Flag so theres not much to say there, I’ll be honest though if theres one thing I like about this game over Black Flag is the set pieces. I think this is it’s strongest feature, the set pieces here were amazing the lisbon Earthquake? The chase for Liam? The chase to the precursor site? Idk man I just love the set pieces here and if I wanna keep this somewhat positive I’ll give it that.
There are more categories I could add but this is long enough as it is so heres the conclusion.
TLDR Conclusion: Decent Ideas, Shit execution, Assassin’s Creed Rogue is just missed potential, we should get another game set in the perspective of a Templar but knowing Ubisoft rn I doubt that’ll happen.
