3/5 ★ – l__l's review of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

While I can recognize the many qualities of the game, I have a difficult time finding enjoyment in many of the game's mechanics, which seem very old-school. Long stretches without checkpoints, excruciatingly long boss battles, even when using fast strats, easily missable collectables that force you to restart levels if missed and so on. I find many of these design elements to be frustrating, maybe I'm too young to get them, but I feel like the game often doesn't respect my time. With all of this in mind, there is still a lot of fun to be had in the core platforming gameplay. I would simply argue that most of the things sorrounding it, are flawed and outdated. In my opinion at least. Ultimately I did enjoy my time with DKCTF, but I have no intentions on returning for collectibles, or the many secret stages I intentionally passed right by.
