5/5 ★ – soulfulgamer19's review of Enter the Gungeon.

The only game I’ve ever put over 100 hours into. It starts off brutally hard as you first learn the game’s mechanics, but the fact that your success is purely determined by skill makes you want to dive right back in and apply what you’ve learned to your next run. This is the first roguelike that really clicked with me, and I understand now why they can be so addicting. Compared to other roguelikes, I think what makes ETG’s formula perfect is: (1) precise controls and visibility, (2) the amazing dodge roll mechanic, (3) charming pixel art and tone, (4) many secrets that encourage additional playthroughs, and (5) an absolutely mind-boggling variety of guns and items. This last point is what really sets ETG apart—the sheer amount and level of creativity for the guns is stupendous, from the duck hunter gun, to the mega man blaster, a gun that shoots other guns, a lamp that shoots a genie, and more. It’s glorious and hilarious and makes you want to try them all just to see if you can make it work. This is a game that one could possibly play forever because it is so simple to pick up, yet so deep and so fun, especially if you’re going for completion. It took me most of those hundred hours to complete my first run, but when I did, it was the greatest feeling of gratification I’ve experienced in any video game. I actually got up and danced all the way through the credits. Give this a try if you’re curious about the hype, and if you stick with it, you may never want to leave the gungeon.
