2.5/5 ★ – stlwizard's review of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier.

If this were any other telltale game, I would consider this a decent entry into the franchise. However, this is, in my opinion, telltale's best series, so I expect a lot more than what I got out of this game. I feel as though I was not as connected to the characters, and I felt as though some of the choices were kind of stupid throughout the game. I mean seriously, who was gonna choose clementine over some guy they just met, even though you find out later in the game that that was the better option. The villian of the game was not bad, but it was nothing special. The worst part of this game by far though, was the treatment of the different endings of season 2. I loved that ending, and I believe it was one of the hardest choices I ever had to make in a game. However, you find out in this game that it really did not matter who you picked. Kenny and Jane will both die in the first episode no matter what who you saved. However, if you chose to leave them behind I guess this will not really affect you, but I feel as though that is kind of stupid. Now that I am done with the negatives, I will say that although I definitely expected more out of this game, I still enjoyed myself playing it. I found Javier to be a cool main character, and I enjoyed the little pieces of backstory we got with him each episode. I also think that in terms of gameplay, killing walkers has never been more fun. The introduction of kill combos and the choice of the main characters use of a bat made it extremely fun to use. Also, the death of Javier's niece in the first episode is one of the most shocking moments of the series as a whole. My jaw literally dropped. Another thing I wanted to add was that the ending of this series really felt like my choices mattered, considering we were never going to return to these characters. I'm also really glad that we got to play as clementine still this game as finding out that she was not the playable character in this game was pretty upsetting at first. However, they gave her a pretty interesting story as well, and I'm loving the progression of her character as she is almost an adult now and ready to take on AJ. As problematic as this game was, it had a pretty satisfying conclusion, and I was super hype at Clementine's exit to go find AJ at the end. It did not at all make me wish to stop playing these games, which I am glad for that at least.
