4.5/5 ★ – summercomet's review of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
I really like this game, but it took me a while to truly love it like ocarina. Formulaically, it's fundamentally the same game as Ocarina with a fresh coat of paint and who wouldn't like more ocarina? The issue was that I didn't know what else this game could offer that would differentiate itself from OOT but thankfully, Majora's Mask remedied that concern almost immediately.
The unique plot and atmosphere of MM was what kept me to stay, as the gameplay and graphics were the same as OOT which made sense as it only came out a year after which, as a result, makes MM feels a bit more like an alternate take on OOT rather than an actual sequel.
Without spoilers much of the story, the game takes Zelda into a surprisingly dark and horror-centric avenue and creating an amazingly engaging ambience that can be even creepier and scarier than later, more obvious entries (Twilight Princess). Interactions between characters are a lot more interesting, set pieces and levels are designed a lot more uniquely, and the music benefits a lot more from the boost in atmosphere. The mood and undertones are ridiculously cool and I would want Nintendo to do something like this again, creating such an interesting plot with creepy connotations disguised in the cutesy N64 artstyle.
With the biggest areas of praise out of the way, the boss fights are still fantastic, levels are still creative as ever but feels a bit longer and slightly more tedious, and gameplay is switched up with the Mask system which adds a lot more value to gameplay on top of the Ocarina while doing a great jobfleshing out the Zelda lore. Overall, I still prefer OOT because of its timeless nature and classic feel but Majora's Mask does a fantastic job keeping up with its older brother with its complexity.
