4.5/5 ★ – thegeekboy's review of Sonic Frontiers.

It is by far the longest Sonic games I’ve played, taking me over 2 weeks, but was it worth it? Somewhat of a yes. I loved Frontiers, it really brought the franchise back to when Sonic used to have incredible storytelling, and it does it in a different way with the whole open world gameplay. Sonic isn’t new to open world, as SA1 and 06 had somewhat of in open world, but this game goes all out with it, with it actually feeling like a modern open world game. The game play feels nice, the game lets you upgrade Sonic as you go, and the graphics are immaculate! The game finally introduces new characters like Sage who is absolutely one of my favorite Sonic characters, she feels like what Infinite was supposed to be, but better. The game also humanizes Eggman with giving him sage. The open world aspect is fun, but some worlds are definitely better than others, some just kinda felt repetitive or just annoying to play at times. The soundtrack is also banger, on top of that there’s a feature where you can run around, listening to songs from previous games. I also just loved the lore that this game introduced about the ancestors and the chaos emeralds, giving them more depth, something that hasn’t been done since SA1. Overall great game, definitely a step up from the sonic franchise after games from colors-forces had poor stories. I’d definitely revisit it to complete all the open world stuff.
